Austin Peay State University’s baseball team will play Tennessee Tech in a midweek game as the Governors conclude their nine-game road stretch, according to an April 6 announcement. The matchup is scheduled for Tuesday at Bush Stadium in Cookeville, Tennessee.
The game comes after Austin Peay secured its third Atlantic Sun Conference series win of the season by taking two out of three games against Eastern Kentucky. With this result, the Governors are now tied for first place in the ASUN Gold Division with Lipscomb and North Alabama. The team has won three of its four conference series so far this year.
In midweek contests this season, Austin Peay holds a record of two wins and four losses. Both victories came during a doubleheader against Ohio on March 10, while all four defeats were against Southeastern Conference teams—three of which were nationally ranked at the time.
Redshirt junior Ray Velazquez currently leads the Governors with nine home runs, tying him for third-most in the ASUN Conference. He has hit four home runs over his last five games and raised his batting average to .296.
Tennessee Tech enters Tuesday’s game with a 10-22 overall record and stands last in the Ohio Valley Conference standings. The Golden Eagles recently ended an eight-game losing streak by winning their series opener against Eastern Illinois but lost the next two games. Head coach Matt Bragga is leading Tennessee Tech in his twentieth season with the program.
The starting pitcher for Austin Peay has not been announced yet. Tennessee Tech will start redshirt junior right-hander Lawson Stricklin, who holds a 0-1 record and a 12.96 earned run average through nine appearances this season.
Austin Peay leads the all-time series against Tennessee Tech with a record of 99-87-1 dating back to 1938 and is currently on a two-game winning streak over their opponent from last season.
