Austin Peay State University’s baseball team will host North Alabama for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series beginning Friday, April 9, at Joe Maynard Field at Raymond C. Hand Park in Clarksville.
The matchup is significant as both teams are currently tied with Lipscomb for first place in the ASUN Gold Division. The Governors have won three of their four conference series this season and hold a 7-5 record in league play, while North Alabama also stands at 7-5.
Austin Peay enters the weekend after a close midweek loss to Tennessee Tech but previously secured a road series win against Eastern Kentucky. The Governors have played most of their games on the road this season and are looking to improve their home record, which currently stands at 5-3. Redshirt junior Ray Velazquez leads Austin Peay with nine home runs—tied for third-most in the conference—and has raised his batting average above .300 after recent performances.
North Alabama arrives following a one-game losing streak after falling to UT Martin earlier this week. The Lions have claimed two conference series wins so far under head coach Jad Prachniak, who is now in his fourth year leading the program.
Pitching matchups for the weekend include Austin Peay’s Cody Airington facing Justus Agosto on Friday; Ryker Walton taking on Tripp Patterson Saturday; and DJ Merriweather set to oppose Reese Young Sunday. In all-time meetings dating back to 1935, North Alabama holds a narrow lead over Austin Peay, but the Governors carry a three-game winning streak into this series following last year’s sweep.
